Hairy Woodpecker Male. Although much larger than the Downy Woodpecker, the easiest way to tell the two species apart is by looking at the head and bill. The Hairy has a round head with a heavy, strong-looking bill whereas the Downy's bill is small compared to the head. This bird was photographed in a dead tree outside my window.
